In This Article

At Stark Medical – Chico Primary Care, we are dedicated to being part of the Northern California Opioid Addiction Recovery solution. With the rise in prescription drug misuse and the growing threat of fentanyl abuse, the need for comprehensive, compassionate care in California is greater than ever.

Our holistic approach to opioid recovery integrates evidence-based treatment methods with personalized support. Our addiction treatment is accessible via telehealth across the state of California – and through in-person visits to our office in Chico (in-person Chico appointments are available one week per month).

Whether you live in a metropolitan area or a small Central Valley town – we ensure that distance or location is never a barrier to receiving quality care.

Opioid-related deaths continue to rise across the United States, and California is no exception. California has seen a sharp rise in opioid-related overdoses in recent years, mainly due to the increasing presence of fentanyl in street drugs.

According to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), there were over 7,800 opioid-related overdose deaths in the state in 2023 alone, with fentanyl accounting for nearly 88% of those fatalities. From Los Angeles to Redding, no part of the state has remained untouched by this crisis.

Understanding the Rising Opioid Addiction Crisis Stark Medical Chico Primary Care

Understanding the California Rising Opioid Addiction Crisis

The California opioid epidemic is a public health crisis that has evolved over the past two decades. Initially fueled by the over-prescription of opioid painkillers, the opioid crisis has escalated with the widespread availability of illicit opioids like heroin and fentanyl.

Fentanyl, in particular, is a synthetic opioid that is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine, making it especially dangerous. Even a tiny amount can be lethal, and it is often unknowingly mixed into other drugs, increasing the risk of accidental overdose.

California has been particularly hard-hit by fentanyl-related fatalities.

According to CDPH, the rate of fentanyl-related overdose deaths among Californians aged 15–24 has increased by more than 1,000% since 2017. The crisis has disproportionately affected young adults, communities of color, and individuals experiencing homelessness. Local emergency rooms, first responders, and public health officials have seen an unprecedented increase in overdoses involving counterfeit pills laced with fentanyl. These are often obtained unknowingly by those seeking relief from pain or emotional distress.

Prescription opioid abuse often begins with legitimate medical use that gradually turns into dependence and addiction.

Studies show that nearly 80% of people who use heroin first misused prescription opioids. The transition from prescription misuse to illicit drug use is alarmingly common. And without proper intervention, the consequences can be devastating.

Stark Medical is working to break this cycle by providing accessible, stigma-free treatment to Californians from all walks of life.

California Opioid Crisis Timeline

In the last two decades, the opioid crisis has killed over 564,000 people from overdose deaths alone. Over 150 people die every day because of synthetic opioids like fentanyl. Since 1999, the US has been faced with an evolving crisis of opioid addiction, overdose and death.

Timeline below from California’s Opioid Response

1990’s – Big Pharma markets prescription opioids like OxyContin as less addictive than older drugs without any scientific evidence in support of that claim, leading to the vast over-prescription of opioids and a rise in opioid addiction, overdose and death.

2010 – The medical industry begins to realize the dangers of prescription opioids; those addicted to opioids turn to illegal markets like heroin instead, triggering a second wave of overdoses and deaths.

2013 – Synthetic opioids like fentanyl grow more popular due to their potency and relative cheapness, sending overdose deaths skyrocketing.

2023 – Emerging threats include fentanyl being cut with xylazine, or mixed with illicit stimulants like methamphetamine or cocaine—driving an even deadlier wave of overdoses and deaths.

Our goal is to support our patients at every stage of their recovery. We provide a range of evidence-based treatments designed to help individuals overcome opioid dependency.

  • 1. Counseling
Therapeutic support is a cornerstone of addiction recovery. Our telehealth addiction treatment services allow patients to engage in one-on-one or group sessions with our experienced professionals. Counseling helps patients confront the root causes of their drug use and provides a blueprint for developing healthier behaviors.
  • 2. Detox Support
The detoxification process can be physically and emotionally challenging. While we do not offer inpatient detox services, our medical team provides remote monitoring and advice on how to manage opioid withdrawal symptoms safely. If necessary, we can also refer patients to appropriate detox facilities while continuing to support them through telehealth consultations.
  • 3. Identifying Triggers
One of the most crucial aspects of opioid addiction recovery is recognizing the situations, emotions, and behaviors that lead to using drugs in the first place. Our healthcare professionals help patients identify these triggers and develop personalized strategies to avoid or cope with them effectively.
  • 4. Developing Effective Coping Mechanisms
Becoming dependent on drugs often stems from stress, anxiety, or emotional distress. Cultivating healthy and practicable strategies for dealing with life’s ups and downs is key in relapse prevention. At Stark Medical, we work with patients to develop effective coping mechanisms, including stress management techniques, healthy lifestyle changes, and behavioral modifications that eliminate reliance on drugs as a coping tool.
  • 5. Mindfulness Practices
Mindfulness is an indispensable tool in addiction recovery. Your mind is the battlefield where cravings, regrets, and resentments can assail you. Patients develop greater self-control and emotional resilience by practicing mindfulness techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, and cognitive awareness. Our telehealth sessions guide patients through these exercises, helping them incorporate mindfulness into their daily routines.
  • 6. Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) and Anti-Craving Medications
For many patients, cravings present a persistent and significant barrier to achieving long-term sobriety. We provide FDA-approved medications that can help to reduce cravings and support long-term recovery. Our medical team carefully assesses each patient’s needs to determine the most appropriate medication plan.

Alcoholism Disease Progression and Health Effects Stark Medical Chico Primary Care

Alcoholism Disease Progression and Health Effects

Alcohol addiction is a chronic relapsing disorder associated with compulsive alcohol drinking, the loss of control over intake, and the emergence of a negative emotional state when alcohol is no longer available.

Alcohol abuse occurs when drinking habits negatively affect a person’s health, daily responsibilities, and social life.

While occasional drinking is not necessarily harmful, consistent heavy consumption can lead to dependence, addiction, and serious medical conditions such as liver disease, cardiovascular issues, and mental health disorders. Alcohol abuse can also contribute to accidents, impaired judgment, strained relationships, and difficulty maintaining employment.

Alcohol is not a solution – it’s a vicious cycle.

While alcohol might seem to relieve stress or anxiety in the beginning – it’s actually altering brain chemistry in a way that just makes those feelings worse over time.

Over time, excessive alcohol consumption can alter brain chemistry. Once this happens, it can be increasingly difficult to control cravings and decision-making. Recognizing the signs of alcohol abuse – which include increased tolerance, withdrawal symptoms, and an inability to stop drinking despite negative consequences – is the first step toward seeking help.

Early intervention can significantly improve recovery outcomes and prevent further damage to physical and mental health.

Stark Medical Primary Care in Chico California, Telehealth - Medication-Assisted Treatment MAT with Counseling is Available

Medication-assisted Treatment (MAT) for Opioid Withdrawal

Medication assisted treatment (MAT) with buprenorphine is a safe and effective method to help people with an opioid use disorder stop using prescription pain medications, heroin, and other opioids.
There are three main phases of MAT: induction (first 1-2 days), stabilization (several weeks), and maintenance (as long as it takes). Before you start treatment, be sure to talk with your health care provider about your plans for treatment.

Opioid addiction is a major public health issue across California. By 2024, roughly 1.75% of California residents were estimated to have an opioid use disorder.

California’s opioid deaths increased by 121% in 3 years. What’s driving the crisis?

The opioid crisis continues to challenge communities throughout California, affecting individuals and families from all walks of life.

Whether it stems from prescription painkillers or street drugs like heroin and fentanyl, opioid dependence can lead to devastating health consequences if left untreated.

Fortunately, there is hope—and help—with Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), a proven and effective method for managing opioid withdrawal and supporting long-term recovery.

MAT – particularly methadone and buprenorphine – is considered the “gold standard” of OUD
treatment because of the overwhelming evidence of its effectiveness.16 The American Society
of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the
National Council for Behavioral Health (NCBH), the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA),
World Health Organization (WHO), and patient advocate groups all strongly support
      increased access to MAT.

At Stark Medical Chico Primary Healthcare, we provide virtual telehealth treatment for all California residents, making MAT and other vital healthcare services more accessible than ever before.

Based in Chico, California, our clinic also offers in-person appointments one week each month. Call 530-514-0904 to schedule your visit or to learn more about how MAT can help you or a loved one take the first step toward recovery.

Stark Medical Chico California Diagnosis by Radio

Origins and Early Use of Telemedicine in the U.S.

Telemedicine’s roots trace back farther than many realize. In the late 19th century, physicians began using the telephone to consult on patient care, cutting down unnecessary office visits as early as 1879.

By the early 20th century, innovators imagined using radio and pictures for remote doctor visits. A famous 1925 magazine cover titled “Diagnosis by Radio” depicted a doctor examining a patient over a video-enabled radio device – a remarkably accurate vision of telemedicine’s future, considering this was decades before television and videoconferencing were commonplace.

The first documented practical use of telemedicine in the U.S. came mid-century. In 1948, radiology images were successfully sent 24 miles via telephone line in Pennsylvania – the earliest example of electronic medical image transfer. This teleradiology proof-of-concept showed that medical data could be transmitted between sites to aid diagnosis.

Soon after, academic centers started experimenting with interactive video. In 1959, the University of Nebraska used two-way television to transmit neurological exams to medical students across campus. By 1964, Nebraska established a telemedicine link over 100 miles to a remote state hospital, enabling speech therapy, neurological exams, and psychiatric consultations at a distance.

This early program demonstrated that specialists could extend care to remote areas via closed-circuit TV. A few years later, in 1967, physicians in Miami transmitted electrocardiogram (EKG) rhythms by radio from ambulances to the hospital, allowing faster heart attack treatment for patients en route. These mid-century projects marked telemedicine’s transition from theory to reality.

Stark Medical Chico California Telemedicine’s Role in Rural Healthcare

Bridging the Gap: How Telemedicine Transformed Rural Healthcare

One of telemedicine’s most important roles has been bringing health services to rural and underserved communities.

Rural Americans have long faced difficulty accessing specialty care due to distance and provider shortages. Telemedicine helps bridge that gap by connecting small or remote clinics with specialists in larger centers. For example, the Telestroke networks allow a patient in a rural hospital to be evaluated in real-time by a neurologist via video, ensuring timely stroke treatment that local staff alone might not provide. Access to telehealth means rural patients can receive critical care without transferring to a distant facility, giving them equal chances of a good outcome in emergencies like stroke.

During the 1970s, some of the first large telemedicine trials specifically targeted rural populations.

Today, patients save on travel time and cost, and rural hospitals can offer more services with remote specialist support. Telemedicine has also helped recruit providers to rural areas by enabling professional collaboration and off-site continuing education.

Overall, telemedicine has become a lifeline for rural healthcare, solving disparities in access.

Stark Medical - Telehealth Chronic Disease Management and Prescriptions, Chico California

Enhancing Chronic Disease Care Through Telehealth

Telemedicine offers convenient, proactive care for patients with chronic diseases that can lead to better health outcomes. Chronic conditions like heart failure, diabetes, hypertension, and COPD often require frequent monitoring and early intervention to prevent complications. Telemedicine facilitates this through remote patient monitoring and virtual check-ups that keep patients stable and out of the hospital.

One landmark example comes from a Partners HealthCare study of over 3,000 heart failure patients who were given home monitoring devices. Patients recorded daily measurements (blood pressure, weight, heart rate, etc.), which were uploaded via telephone lines to a monitoring system that alerted nurses to concerning trends. Over six years, this telehealth program reduced hospital readmissions by 44% and saved more than $10 million, while allowing a small team of nurses to effectively care for hundreds of patients remotely.

The study illustrates telemedicine’s potential to improve chronic disease outcomes by catching issues early and supporting patients in self-management, all while lowering costs and avoiding unnecessary admissions. Notably, 36% of participating veterans were able to maintain independent living who might otherwise have needed long-term care, showing how telehealth can support aging in place for those with chronic conditions.

Expanding addiction treatment services through telemedicine in California has significantly enhanced access to care, particularly for individuals in remote or underserved areas. The launch of the California Telehealth Network (CTN) in 2010 marked a pivotal step in this direction, enabling providers like Stark Medical to offer addiction treatment and medical care to those who previously faced challenges in accessing such services due to geographical constraints.

Telemedicine has also facilitated the delivery of Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) patients. The integration of telehealth services with MAT Medication-Assisted Treatment, referred to as TeleMAT, allows patients to receive necessary medications for opioid treatment (such as buprenorphine) in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies. This approach addresses ‘whole patient’ needs and ensures comprehensive care without the necessity of in-person visits.

Additionally, programs like SMART Recovery have adapted to the digital landscape by offering online meetings and support groups. These virtual sessions provide peer support and utilize evidence-informed programs to assist individuals in managing addictive behaviors, making recovery resources more accessible to Californians regardless of their location.

The expansion of telehealth services in California has not only improved access to addiction treatment but has also addressed disparities in healthcare delivery. By leveraging technology, Stark Medical continues to enhance the reach and effectiveness of addiction treatment programs.

Stark Medical Chico California How the Covid-19 pandemic Supercharged Telemedicine Adoption

How The COVID-19 Pandemic Supercharged Telemedicine Adoption

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 catapulted telemedicine into the forefront of health care. With lockdowns and social distancing, providers and patients turned to virtual visits to maintain medical services while avoiding virus exposure. In the spring of 2020, telehealth usage surged by over 600% at some health centers.

Crucially, government regulators moved quickly to relax rules that had limited telemedicine’s use. In March 2020, the Department of Health and Human Services waived Medicare’s strict requirements on telehealth – before COVID, Medicare only paid for telemedicine for rural patients in certain facilities. Still, the waiver allowed beneficiaries to receive telehealth from home.

This temporary policy change meant millions of seniors could do virtual visits for the first time. Many states similarly eased licensing to let out-of-state physicians practice via telehealth and required private insurers to cover telemedicine like in-person care. These emergency measures rapidly removed barriers, and providers and patients eagerly embraced the convenience and safety of virtual care during the pandemic.

Telemedicine has since seen widespread adoption across almost every field of medicine since 2020.
