Opioid-related deaths continue to rise across the United States, and California is no exception. California has seen a sharp rise in opioid-related overdoses in recent years, mainly due to the increasing presence of fentanyl in street drugs.

According to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), there were over 7,800 opioid-related overdose deaths in the state in 2023 alone, with fentanyl accounting for nearly 88% of those fatalities. From Los Angeles to Redding, no part of the state has remained untouched by this crisis.

The California opioid epidemic is a public health crisis that has evolved over the past two decades. Initially fueled by the over-prescription of opioid painkillers, the opioid crisis has escalated with the widespread availability of illicit opioids like heroin and fentanyl.

Fentanyl, in particular, is a synthetic opioid that is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine, making it especially dangerous. Even a tiny amount can be lethal, and it is often unknowingly mixed into other drugs, increasing the risk of accidental overdose.

California has been particularly hard-hit by fentanyl-related fatalities.

According to CDPH, the rate of fentanyl-related overdose deaths among Californians aged 15–24 has increased by more than 1,000% since 2017. The crisis has disproportionately affected young adults, communities of color, and individuals experiencing homelessness. Local emergency rooms, first responders, and public health officials have seen an unprecedented increase in overdoses involving counterfeit pills laced with fentanyl. These are often obtained unknowingly by those seeking relief from pain or emotional distress.

Studies show that nearly 80% of people who use heroin first misused prescription opioids. The transition from prescription misuse to illicit drug use is alarmingly common. And without proper intervention, the consequences can be devastating.

In the last two decades, the opioid crisis has killed over 564,000 people from overdose deaths alone. Over 150 people die every day because of synthetic opioids like fentanyl. Since 1999, the US has been faced with an evolving crisis of opioid addiction, overdose and death.

1990’s – Big Pharma markets prescription opioids like OxyContin as less addictive than older drugs without any scientific evidence in support of that claim, leading to the vast over-prescription of opioids and a rise in opioid addiction, overdose and death.

2010 – The medical industry begins to realize the dangers of prescription opioids; those addicted to opioids turn to illegal markets like heroin instead, triggering a second wave of overdoses and deaths.

2013 – Synthetic opioids like fentanyl grow more popular due to their potency and relative cheapness, sending overdose deaths skyrocketing. 

2023 – Emerging threats include fentanyl being cut with xylazine, or mixed with illicit stimulants like methamphetamine or cocaine—driving an even deadlier wave of overdoses and deaths.
